Many think that we are building something new with our mission to build a garment district in Seattle. Nothing could be further from the truth. A Garment District in Seattle has been over 100 years in the making with companies like Filson’s being established here in 1897, and Nordstrom in 1901. The garment industry’s history in Seattle is just as deep and diverse as that of New York and Los Angeles, and the numbers prove it.
However as the chart at the bottom of the infographic shows the region is predicted to see a decline in hand sewers and sewing machine operators despite an increase in other key industry job categories. A strong and viable manufacturing base is an essential component of continuing the region’s history as a leader in the industry.
With over 400 veterans being discharged from military service from Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Pierce County a month on average we have an opportunity, and obligation to help these noble men and women who sacrificed so much for us transition into the private sector. With their attention to detail, strong work ethic, and patriotism who better to produce ‘Made in USA’ apparel with the proper training. Even if it is merely temporary while they pursue an education, or get re-acclimated to civilian society. Do we not owe them that?
